Griffin Incidents (2011)

WEEK 1click to show
DATE DESCRIPTION
22/03 8:10am Travelling east along the A822 between the end of the Trochry straight and the Rumbling Bridge I encountered 6 unescorted abnormal loads. Some distance behind the convoy was an escort van.
22/03 The Morrison School Minibus driver encounter this load on the A826 between Milton Junction and entrance to Griffin Wind Farm
23/03 12.15pm I followed an unescorted low loader from the site to Dunkeld, with a large crawler on board. Fortunate not to meet on comming HGV. Wonder what are the rules on lorry size is it the width of the trailer including or excluding load?
23/03 3.30pm Unscheduled third police escorted abnormal load started up road at 3.30pm. I was delayed for at least 20 minutes.
23/03 4:04pm Near miss with an HGV and a car on the west side of the Drumour Schoolhouse bend.
24/03 7:50am On my way down the road I was forced to yield to a gaggle of contractors on their way to Griffin. They clearly think the white lines are advisory only as several of them were well over onto my side of the road.
24/03 4.00pm Travelling up from Dunkeld encountered stationary traffic at Trochry caused by Abnormal load HGV, were stopped again at the Milton junction. It must have taken around 45 minutes to get from the A9 past the site entrance.
24/03 4.55pm Met an aggregate lorry at 16.55 arriving at the Griffin site entrance - registration number XXXX XXX - again a clear breach of the afternoon 'no HGV' time period.
24/03 pm Returning empty turbine component transporters forced vehicles off the road to pass, on one occasion onto private property.
24/03 Courier delivery deylayed by a day because of delays caused by abnormal load.
26/03 11.55am Delivering escorted turbine transporters forced two on-coming cars to reverse at least 150m.
26/03 13.20pm Abnormal load delivery caused a 20minute hold-up of traffic today. Three components arrived at 12.20pm. and the lead lorry was unable to get up the access road into the forest thereby holding up traffic for at least 20mins, until the second and third were moved off the road and allowed traffic to flow again. An hour after, two of the vehicles were still waiting to gain access.
26/03 5.35pm An HGV crane vehicle reversed round a blind bend and then a further 250m back to another bend and onto private property to allow two empty turbine transporters to pass. It deliberately reversed onto and damaged private property beyond the 0.5 m verge. This manoeuvre left tracks showing that the minimum passing width required was 7.6 m, wider than the vast majority of the route.

29/03 8.35am A fully laden foresty truck came very close to hitting the school bus at speed while the bus was parked at the Tomnagairn road end.
29/03 pm Log lorries travelling at suspect speeds i.e. over 40mph.
30/03 4.30pm I was forced off the road by a Mutch recovery lorry which was heading back down to the A9 this happened just below the old coach house.
01/04 7.30am I was forced off the road by a Mutch recovery lorry which was heading back down to the A9 this happened just below the old coach house.
WEEK 3click to show
DATE DESCRIPTION
04/04 1.30pm Wood lorry heading up at speed estimate 50>60 mph in middle of road between Corbenic and Achnacarry.
04/04 pm Damage to both a telegraph pole and roadside verge. Pole left leaning. The edge of the tarmac is breaking up, and there is a deep rut at the edge of the road - which is a danger to other vehicles who may have to pull over to allow a large lorry to pass.
06/04 5.50pm Two large green and yellow cranes parked in inver slip road on A9. Contacted police as the cranes were causing an obstruction for vechiles exiting the A9 into Inver Junction, also reducing visability for vechiles leaving Inver Junction.
WEEK 4click to show
DATE DESCRIPTION
12/04 6.40pm I narrowly avoided a head on collision with an unusually wide lorry. Between Trochry and Inver I think in the wooded area. It was a low loader with one or two very large blue metal looking frames on the back. It was across the white line by several feet, and if I had not swerved violently, it would have hit me. I did not expect to meet an abnormally wide lorry that late at night. There was no escort vehicle preceding it.
12/04 7pm Travelling with my three children in the car going west on the A822 when an Andy Pilgrim Forestry vehicle thundered towards me taking up a large part of the west bound lane. I was in a Landrover and was travelling slowly and therefore was able to get my car off the road quickly to avoid collision.
13/04 8.04am Heading down Strathbraan I came across one large crane heading up the strath at Trochry. The crane was taking up the road, there was about only 1-1.5 m left of the road. The escort vehicle was spotted 6 minuets later BEHIND driving like an idiot. I could count at least 2 highway code violations dangerous driving and careless driving plus speeding.
14/04 7.45am Large crane without escort travelling towards work site.
14/04 8.45am Proceeding along the A822 travelling West. Just before the Little Trochry farm entrance was forced to break very suddenly due to the two wood lorries taking up the whole road coming round the bend.Had to manoeuvre onto the left grass verge.
14/04 8.45am On the A822 I was forced off the road, into the muddy ruts at the side by two log transporters. They were taking up most of the road, travelling very close together and had not slowed down for the corner. The vehicles behind me also had to take avoiding action.
15/04 am Timber lorry speeding through Trochry bends.
15/04 1.30pm Yellow timber lorry came down C504 at speed approx 1pm - near miss with three vehicle. Reported to police escorting convoy.
15/04 1.30pm Followed a yellow timber lorry (loaded) on the A822 heading towards Dunkeld. Progress was slow because of an escorted crane travelling in front. At the Inver slip road the timber lorry turned off and travelled down the slip road at what was an excessive speed - possibly 30mph. The lorry was throwing up so much dust that it was impossible to read the registration. The lorry caused two cars to pull into the lay-bys and another to move off the road. It then met oncomming car driving on the Inver road, opposite the caravan park. This car had to pull right off the road to avoid the timber lorry, that showed no sign of decelerating. It was obvious that the timber lorry was using the Inver road to try to beat the escorted crane and avoid the possible 13.30 convoy. This was reported this to the police at the A9 junction and they said that it should be logged. The lorry should not have been using the Inver Road, but Police apparently have done nothing about it.
16/04 6pm I met head-on a large articulated flat-bed lorry in the middle of railway bridge on the A822. I had to reverse to allow the lorry to pass. Not an issue in itself. In the interests of safety, it seems appropriate for there to be an escort in front of such large vehicles on such a small narrow and often precipitous road to warn of their arrival.
16/04 6pm Saw white lorry with low loader on the back heading to Dunkeld.
17/04 7.15pm
&
9.15pm
Abnormal HGV low loader carrying earth mover with escort van heading to site and returning from site. The escort vehicle was reg 97G2607, and the abnormal load was reg 07DL229. Reported by multiple sources.

DATE DESCRIPTION
19/04 5.30pm I happened to be in Trochry, outside Meikle Trochry, just after 5.30pm yesterday and looking up to the A822 above when these AL empties swept past. In my view they were going too fast for that stretch (the bend leading onto the Trochry junction on the left going east). It is not a point on that road at which 40mph would be safe , even if legal, for anything that size - let alone in convoy with vehicles close to each other - and I think they must have been going very close to that.
19/04 5.30pm I witnessed when a convoy of three abnormal load HGVs arrived at the A9. The A9 was quite busy - with traffic in both directions. The escort vehicle exited the A822 and headed south, then the first HGV followed if shortly afterwards. The second HGV then crossed and went onto the sliproad to Dunkeld before it then attempted to move across into the southbound lane of the A9 - however by that time there was southbound traffic in that lane beside it. The HGV appeared to have chosen a moment when the road was not clear for a sufficient distance to allow it to make the manoeuvre onto the southbound carriageway without impeding existing traffic on the A9. The third HGV then exited the A822 and again it too had to cross onto the sliproad to Dunkeld - then rejoin the A9 southbound carriageway. - Before it was opposite the Dunkeld junction it had gathered several southbound vehicles behind it which had to break their speed significantly due to the slow speed of the HGV following its turning manoeuvre.
20/04 3.30pm Unescorted abnormal load reg M55 PHH travelled to site from A9.

9/05 4.30pm I encountered a fast moving escort vehicle for the abnormal load convoys driving (Give Svaergods?), whose driver insistently/aggressively signalled to me to slow down and pull over to make way for 2 abnormal load vehicles returning unladen and at speed to the A9.
9/05 7.30pm At 7.30pm two extra wide lorries passed me, the first was a Harpers lorry SY08---, the second immediately behind had no identification but the first part of the number plate was SJ57. It was not possible to get more details as I was too busy swerving to avoid collision. This was near to the Ladywell forest entrance. Then at 7.35 I was nearly forced off the road by a yellow lorry carrying a huge red crane (the usual ones) the first part of the plate was SJ07.
10/05 7.30am Our head teacher passed a large flat bed carrying what I think was a transformer (as well as several timber lorries which were trying to get past each other going in opposite directions ) as they drove to school this morning from their home in Crieff. They forced the car onto the grass.
10/05 8.00am At the sharp bend East of Trochry, an accident was only avoided as a result of me braking hard and steering left (towards the river!), and the driver of the timber lorry steering into the bank on his side - and removing large amounts of soil and overhanging branches.
10/05 8.30am The large flat bed carrying, what I think was a transformer, was photographed travelling towards the Griffin site, at exactly the same time that the children were travelling down the road to school on the bus.
10/05 4.00pm As I approached the bridge, a timber lorry came careering towards me, completely on my side of the road. As I was travelling particularly slowly, I was able to stop. Two members of our work force happened to be following the lorry on their way home from work at Milton and they watched the lorry swing on to my side of the road and actually commented to each other ‘I hope that there is no one on the other side of that bridge. They are happy to be contacted in relation to this incident.

And a tanker type lorry, XXXX XXX. A total of 8 hgvs in the space of 10 minutes, during school bus time. Hardly showing any respect to the TMP.
13/06 12.00pm Turbines at a halt at Trochry. HGV's backed down the side road. Two blades moved up the road and we were allowed to move at 12.45pm. Blade still at Trochry at 2.30pm.

29/07 11am I was driving back from Dunkeld when I met a Give Svaergods lorry on the bad bend between trochry and rumbling bridge cottage. As usual I was well on my side of the road when as I rounded the corner I met the lorry going in the other direction. Due to its length the center portion of the lorry came well over the line and I thought that I was going to be hit by it. I clung as close to the verge as I could and slammed on the brakes as the lorry was just by my right ear. The lorry too stopped with just inches to spare between us. I then managed to squeeze past, shaking with shock. I am horrified by what happened. A driver less alert than me or driving a wider vehicle would not have been so lucky.

25/08 4pm  I followed a log lorry most of the way up the road. Between Balachraggan and the Milton junction it was over 50mph.  In addition to speeding, and partially because of the speeding, the lorry was driving well over the white line for much of the time, and more than once he met a vehicle coming the other way (one, a white van, which he met between Trochry and Corbenic noticeably cringed into the side of the road to avoid being hit, another car did what many of us now do when meeting one of these lorries - that is virtually stopped until the lorry had passed).

Long low loader heading to Griffin site in breach of consent -Claimed not to be Griffin related
06/09 8.35pm
Green crane and escort vehicle heading towards Griffin site in breach of consent - Claimed to be mitigated
07/09 am
Our school bus driver had, yet again, 2 extremely close escapes this morning with 2 Mills lorries; the first event actually had him forced into the verge close to the bridge at Corbenic. In view of the fact that a Griffin-bound 50 tonne crane was forced off the road close to that same spot at the weekend is illustrative that construction vehicles are recklessly driving to and from site (One can only imagine what sort of speed the construction vehicle must have been doing in order to get a 50 tonne crane to take that level of avoiding action). And,of course in many cases, they continue to ignore the time restrictions imposed upon them (eg school bus times.)
07/09 1.30pm
I Was following a Mills lorry this evening, it was traveling along the A822 at an average speed of 60 mph. I was pushed off the road at the top end of lady well strait. Mills drivers are using bully boy tactics .

A near miss yesterday afternoon reported to the police, by the low loader which was once again going far too fast, in the middle of the road.
15/09 am & pm Mills tippers in both direction and at School bus times.
15/09 pm
Two huge lorries being escorted down the Strath towards Dunkeld coinciding with school bus. As per usual these escort vehicles were haring down the road, forcing vehicles out of the way, utterly power happy, rude and far too fast and far too far away from the vehicle in question which just leads to confusion on the part of people new to the area who I have known to overtake me as they do not realise what is coming.
WEEK 28click to show
DATE DESCRIPTION
27/09 10am  I had a near miss with a yellow timber lorry on the bad bend between Trochry and Rumbling Bridge Cottage. Neither of us were driving fast or dangerously - I always take this bend slowly and the timber lorry was driving very cautiously - we just had the bad luck to meet at the bend.
27/09 2.30pm
We were blocked in our drive by a camper van heading for Dunkeld. The van was rented by an Australian family visiting Scotland.  They were very flustered and apologetic, and had just been hit by an empty timber lorry heading up the road, which had completely smashed their wing mirror. The driver of the timber lorry failed to stop.
