Development Control Meeting

An Important Event

The Council has voted to object to both wind farms.Thank you to everyone who turned up today at the Council meeting.  An excellent turnout - we could not have
asked for better.  Thanks also for all the letters which were written and cards
which were signed.  They all contributed to letting the Council know that
this was a BIG issue.  Ian Sleith, senior council officer, does not expect that either developer will withdraw their application.  Therefore we should hear about a public inquiry before Christmas - with the actual date of the public inquiry being sometime in late spring or early summer.  One big question still to be ascertained is
whether there will be one or two public inquiries? - Keep watching this space...

Birnam Meeting

A GIANT windfarm on your doorstep?

How will it affect you?

Come along to the Birnam Institute on Wednesday 14th of September at 7.30pm. You will have an opportunity to see key points of the Griffin Wind Farm proposal and to view a slide show of the story of the construction of Cefn Croes wind farm, to see
what building a massive wind farm really involves. The meeting will conclude with
tea and coffee and objection card signing

Griffin \ GreenPower Amendment Submitted

As the title suggests GreenPower have posted their ammended plans for the Griffin development. So after months of keeping everyone waiting we are up against a 28 day deadline to respond - another glorious example of "consultation". Few of you will be surprised to learn that it is still large enough to be a Section 36 proposal i.e. still over 50 Mw and a Scottish Executive rather than a local council decision. Please use our updated short & simple objection on our "What You Can Do" page EVEN IF you sent an original objection.

Mass protest against masses of turbines and massive pylons

Views of Scotland ( www.viewsofscotland.org ) are organising a mass protest meeting at Powis Mains Farm, Blairlogie, Stirling on Tuesday 23rd August at 1.30pm. Please visit their site for full details.

ASWAG supports REAL green power

ASWAG has given its support to a Hydro scheme to be built on the river Braan. The scheme is being proposed by Npower renewables and will have the capacity of approximately 3MW, producing an estimated average annual energy of 11.4GWh. A unanimious vote applauded the scheme which unlike proposed windfarms:

- IS of appropriate scale

- DOES take account of scenery and tourist implications

- DOES take account of the requirements of wildlife

- DOES take account of the views of the local community

- DOES take account of infrastructure requirements and impositions

- DID supply a well researched and thourough Environmental Statement

The scheme will generate enough electricity to power around 2,000 homes. And of course this being Scotland rain is far more reliable than wind!

Calliachar \ I&H Brown Amendment Submitted

As the title suggests I&H Brown have posted their ammended plans for the Calliachar development.

Scotch Beef

The photo below shows some of the guys in our group at one of the sites selected for development that we at ASWAG believe ought to be protected...

They thought they ought to get a 'message' across...

We thought they should do it with passion! ...

Showing it like it is

The Scottish Wind Assesment Project has caused a minor media sensation with the release of their Gazetteer of Wind Power in Scotland containing a map of the country showing current proposed & approved industrial windfarm developmemts. Looks like the old place is sufferring from an extremly bad case of the measels! Until their own site is up & running we are hosting a downloadeable version on our "Links to documents" page and a smaller version of their map is on our "Facts & Figures" page.

Newsnight Scotland BBC2 20th January.

Jobs Bonanza?

More likely a cash bonanza for wind turbine company moguls

The Newsnight Scotland program focused on the claims by the Scottish Renewables Forum that wind power creates :

Substantial job opportunities

( The program pointed out that these are mostly for short term low tech construction work, high paid hi-tech manufacturing is carried out abroad)

Clean energy

(The program pointed out that this requires 100% backup generation)

Community benefits

(The program pointed out that so far not one community has actually seen any cash from a developer)

We refute the claim that 8000 jobs will be created by wind power development but only if, as the Scottish Renewables Forum claim,

“the negativity of Nimby organisations is resisted.”

From our own experience we know from GreenPower - the company planning a large windfarm at Grffin Forest in the Aberfeldy/Dunkeld area – that a paltry maximum of 7 long term jobs will be created per 82 turbines, proportionally a fraction of Scottish Renewables calculations. Where are all the other jobs coming from?

Also ridiculed were claims by SRF that

"the opposition to wind is a minority, but a vocal one aiming to dictate energy policy"

&

“unfortunately views from the margins gain too much currency. The opposition to wind is a minority, but it is a vocal one aiming to dictate energy policy.”

In an area where nearly 100% of the local population opposes the destruction which wind farms will do, and who have become very well informed, they are as entitled to their say as the wind power companies. Wind turbine companies are poised to gain colossal financial rewards. And we live in a democracy – everyone is entitled to have their say.
